Tango Toolbar - One Program You Don't Want to Tangle With

Most individuals spend quite a bit of time online these days, and as we all look for good ways to save time, many are turning to helpful browser add-ons for great features like ad blockers, easily bookmarked sites, and even instant interactivity with other programs installed on any one computer.  Dubbed "Browser Helper Objects," there are some wonderful aspects to these tools. As with most software today, however, there are also some serious downsides, and one of the biggest is that not every browser helper object is quite as helpful as it should be. Tango Toolbar is one instance, and having this program installed on your machine could spell trouble for your system in the future.

What Is Tango Toolbar - A Quick Overview

Just like the helpful type, Tango Toolbar has been called a browser helper object, but the reality is that it incorporates features of concern to many different security aspects. While some have gone as far as calling it malicious or even categorizing it as "adware," the simple truth is that it can create some security holes on your system that need to be removed as soon as possible.

Keep in mind that this program is not actually a virus. While some antivirus programs today are trained to be able to recognize potential adware programs and other worrisome aspects in the coding of almost any application, many of the security solutions installed on your computer are not, so you can't necessarily expect it to handle the problem for you. It highly depends on whether or not your security system has downloaded a definitions file that helps it to recognize Tango Toolbar. If it hasn't, you'll have to look toward another removal option.

There is a legitimate marketing company called Brand Tango. This toolbar is in no way associated with that company, so typing the toolbar's name into a search engine may result in you coming across that company and its efforts to work hard for its customers.

Recognized Tango Toolbar

If this program is installed on your machine, there are a number of different things that you will probably notice almost immediately.

  • Almost right away, you'll see the toolbar itself appear at the top of Internet Explorer. It says "Tango Toolbar" just under the address bar, and it has a small magnifying glass next to it. You may even see a little pop up blocker count in the far right corner. Most see a pop up ad for the program the first time they restart Internet Explorer after it's been installed, and the ad itself claims to offer users protection against pop up ads while displaying a handy search bar and displaying keywords that may be relevant to the item you're searching for.
  • The toolbar itself, though, isn't a problem for most people. It's the coding behind the toolbar that causes the concern, as one of its primary functions is to redirect you to affiliated sites. Even if you search for something fairly benign, you could be redirected to a commercial site for something Tango is promoting, and often you can't actually reach your initial destination. In fact, even while you're offline, a website can load on its own and appear on your screen. Often these sites are of fairly concerning origins, so it's essential to navigate away from them as soon as possible.
  • The other big problem with Tango Toobar is that it has the capability to display a number of different pop up advertisements while you're online as well as while you're offline. Often the programs advertised are for rogue security programs or other downloadable programs that aren't quite as safe as you'd want them to be, and naturally, clicking on them leads you to the possibility of downloading infected files on your machine.

Understanding Transmission

Knowing how you got the program is almost as important as recognizing the program itself, as it could help you prevent installation in the future. Many people report getting this program after visiting a clone of the Limewire site that they unintentionally hit. For others, however Tango Toolbar is installed with a number of other files thanks to a P2P file sharing network. There are still some individuals who insist they did neither of these things, yet still have it on their computers, so it's possible that other causes will come to light as this program is continually investigated.

Removing Tango Toolbar

If you do have this program installed on your machine, it can create some security risks, as well as a high level of annoyance, so removing it at your earliest opportunity is the best practice. Unfortunately, you cannot do so by simply visiting your computer's add/remove programs menu. You'll either not be able to access it from there or it won't completely remove the program. Instead, you have two main options - remove Tango Toolbar manually or install a reliable antispyware program that has the coding necessary to recognize this program.

If you do choose to remove the program manually, you will need to delete program files and edit your computer's registry, and that can be a little dangerous if you err toward the non technical side of things. To get started, you must reveal any hidden files and folders on your computer, and you can do that by right clicking in Windows Explorer. Choose Tools, then pick Folder Options, and finally, select View. That will give you the option to show hidden files and folders, so you'll want to check that box right away. Keep in mind that you must reverse the change after you've removed Tango Toolbar from your system. From there, it's time to delete the program files, open your registry editor, identify the entries made by Tango Toolbar, and remove them. If you're not sure how to handle any of these processes, please email us for help and detailed instructions. The list of files and registry keys appears at the end of this article.

Perhaps the best way to remove Tango Toolbar is to use a dependable antispyware program like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (Malwarebytes has free malware removal) or Enigma's SpyHunter. There are other good titles out there too. No matter which one you choose, download and install it, then take the time to update the definition files. Set it to scan your computer, and once it does, ask it to automatically remove what it finds or simply click on remove when Tango Toolbar appears in the results list. Scanning your computer regularly with this software will keep problems like this from occurring in the future.
